Some aquarists near the coast can obtain natural seawater (NSW) for their aquariums, but most of us rely on artificial seawater (ASW) made from component salts, in the appropriate amounts, added to freshwater in order to simulate NSW.
However, due to pollution and human activity, about 20% of coral reefs in the world have been damaged beyond repair. The bright side is, if we all take action today, we can still protect the remaining reefs in our oceans. Scientists and conservation groups are working double time to use their expertise in saving our seas and coral reefs.
Because coral reef decline in many areas is largely a result of human impacts, the solution to this crisis also lies in the hands of individuals and their communities. Even if you don''t live near a reef, you can help protect coral reefs. With your help, NOAA will continue to preserve coral reefs for future generations.
